The Lake
Mooselookmeguntic Lake is a part of the Rangeley chain of lakes in the western mountains of Maine. At 16,300 acres, it is the largest in the chain and is considered by many to be one of the loveliest in the state. Mooselook has a maximum depth of 139 feet and its cool clean water provides and excellent fishery for brook trout and landlocked salmon. Fed by Rangeley Lake, the Kennebago and Cupsuptic Rivers and Bemis Stream, Mooselook has more than sufficient areas for natural fish spawning and has in fact not been stocked for several years. Fly fishermen can also enjoy fishing its outlet – historic Upper Dam.
The construction of Upper Dam in the 1850’s joined Mooselook and Cupsuptic Lakes by raising the level of the lake some 14 feet. The various islands and secluded two person beaches provide unlimited boating and paddling fun. The western shore of the lake is in conservation trust insuring that its undeveloped shoreline remains that way forever. Mooselook is home to bald eagles, mink, otter, loons, and wildfowl.

The Region
The Rangeley Lakes Region is rich in outdoor lore. The huge native brook trout brought large numbers of sportsmen and women to the area at the end of the 19th century. Entrepreneurs built huge hotels and steamers plied the waters of the lakes up and down the Rangeley chain. Those days are long gone now. The hotels are gone, as are the steamers and the wooden Rangeley rowboats have been replaced by aluminum Lund’s powered by Honda outboards! But because of conservation efforts and the fact our area economy still relies to a great extent on growing and harvesting trees, much of this beautiful area is at it was 150 years ago.
The town of Rangeley and the village of Oquossoc boast a population of around 1,200. The town has its own K-12 school. The area is also home to Saddleback Mountain, which just celebrated its 50th year in the ski industry. Golfers will find 2 courses to choose from as well as a third 45 minutes away at Sugarloaf. Restaurants, a movie theater, bowling, several museums, a strong arts community, cross-country and snowmobile trails, and a host of other diversions make the Rangeley Region a true four-season destination.
